I’ve never heard of Google Places. What is a listing?
Google, the largest collector of data on the internet, recognized the upward trend of local searches and made a decision to focus on a strategy to give searchers what they’re are looking for in their local towns and cities, whether that be a restaurant, solicitor or beauty salon.
A Google Places Listing is effectively a company profile of your business attached to Google’s local search results. These listings are important because Google ranks these profiles above all other listings in their new first page local search results.
Your Places listing will rank dependent on the completeness of the profile. So it’s important that all information is complete and optimized.
Some business owners ask why they should use internet marketing. What’s in it for them?
Internet marketing can bring thousands of people to your website. These people will be exposed to your business, it’s products and company message and a percentage of these visitors will become new customers.
It’s no longer good enough to just be listed in the phone book and local newspapers. The new generation of buying customers are young, affluent and tech savvy. Ask yourself, do you see them reading traditional newspapers and looking in Yellow Pages? No, they use their smartphones for everything. For finding information, buying products and services, booking vacations and hire vehicles, sending flowers, booking appointments and downloading discount vouchers and videos.
As an entrepreneur, it is crucial to build your brand online, both with your website and social media such as Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube and Twitter. Phone books may become obsolite or fail to exist at all in 10 years time as internet search, whether on computers or smartphones and devices, becomes the defacto way to find phone numbers, local businesses and all other shopping needs.
One of the most common questions we get at WebDesignNewquay is what is search engine optimization and how can it help my business?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of “optimizing” a website for the search engines so that it may be found as high as possible in the search results. The job of search engines like Google is to take a search query and list all the results in a relavent order. Google became the number one search engine because they provide good results. In fact Google accounts for almost 85% of the search market with Yahoo and Bing only accounting for around 10% between them. These statistics should indicate that you need to concentrate on Google results.
Even with Google returning very relavent results:
- 68% of search engine users click results on the first page so it’s vital that you are on page one of the results
- Only 8% of search engine users review more than the first three pages prior to clicking on a result
- 37% of online users associate appearance at the top of search results with a company’s leadership within its industry or category
So how do you get your website high up in these rankings?
Well, this is what SEO is all about. You need to convince the search engines that your site is valuable and you can do this by:
- Making sure other sites link to you. Backlinks are a sure sign of how popular your site is.
- Making sure these backlinks are relavent
- Providing unique and valuable content
- Providing dynamic changing content, in other words – make sure you update regularly
